The SPACE CENTRE is a charity in Preston, which provides disabled children and adults with a unique, caring multi-sensory centre. Four years ago, as demand was so great for this vital service, the Centre decided to raise money and expand. Since then SPACE has successfully raised £1.5 million by fund raising and securing grants, of which every penny has been carefully invested in the purchase of the adjoining building to the original centre and then in careful planning and adaptation of the premises.
Unfortunately, due to financial irregularities which are still being investigated in relation to a former freelance Grants & Trusts officer, the whole project has been put at risk and the Centre is facing closure. £800,000 of funding, that the Trustees believed was in place, does not in fact exist and therefore SPACE cannot pay the builders or specialist contractors for work already completed and cannot fund the rest of the multi-sensory fit-out to create a fantastic new centre.
In response to this crisis a group of Preston businesses gathered to try to help. A committee was established – S.O.S Save Our Space – and this website is part of the efforts to raise the money needed to help secure the future of The SPACE Centre It’s a big challenge – but it’s a very worthy cause. The committee members donate their time and services free of charge.
It’s early days, but already individuals, schools, businesses – all sorts of organisations have started fundraising. There are some great ideas – check out the upcoming events to see what’s going on, and maybe even get inspired to plan your own.
